Friendly Fire Mod 1.12.2/1.11.2/1.10.2 will protect you  pet mobs from being accidently killed by the weapons added to the game. In some circumstances, you are so careful but it is not enough to protect your pet mobs. You can also edit the config file to prevent damage to baby mobs as well, however this is off by default. If you sneak, the mob will not be protected.
